Most hot water services end their life rusting from the inside out. A sacrificial anode will last many, many years but eventually when it does require replacement, your hot water service will begin to rust with little outward signs until it’s all too late.  Unfortunately, the only way to check if your anode is requires replacement is to remove it and do a visual inspection. There is no other way to know if it is still protecting your hot water service or not.
